Understanding Accreditation: What’s the Scenario in the US?
Accreditation is a voluntary process through which institutions of higher education undergo rigorous evaluation by accrediting agencies to ensure they meet specific quality standards. One significant aspect of accreditation is its role in granting eligibility for institutions to participate in Title IV federal financial aid programs, which include grants, loans, and work-study funds. This eligibility is crucial for students seeking financial assistance to fund their education.
While accreditation is important for ensuring educational quality and financial aid eligibility, it also comes with major concerns and limitations. Accrediting standards can sometimes be rigid and may not always align with innovative educational models. And that’s where we, at AIU, don’t agree to! As we don’t believe in conventional accreditation goals being a futuristic and student-centric university, there are often some confusions among people regarding ‘Is AIU a real university?’ , but we are indeed a real university with real accreditation goals – our students’ global success!
In the United States, accreditation is performed by private accrediting agencies, not by the US government. Atlantic International University (AIU) is accredited by the Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges and Universities (ASIC), a private accrediting agency based in the United Kingdom. ASIC accreditation is an internationally recognized quality standard for colleges and universities, and AIU has earned PREMIER Status with ASIC for its commendable areas of operation. Visit ASIC’s Directory of Accredited Colleges and Universities.
It’s important to note that universities in the US are not required to obtain accreditation, as this is a voluntary process. However, compliance with laws that govern universities and granting institutions is mandatory. AIU conforms and adheres to all state and federal laws that regulate its operation as a university and its authority to grant degrees to students who meet graduation requirements.
The Higher Education Act of 1965, specifically Section 496, stipulates that higher education institutions may choose to seek accreditation from agencies approved by the US Department of Education, but it is not mandatory unless they wish to receive federal funds. AIU does NOT receive any federal funds, thus it does not require accreditation from a US Department of Education-approved agency.
ASIC, as an accrediting agency, holds membership in 16 prestigious associations worldwide, including recognition by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in the USA and full membership in the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE).
Why AIU is Not Accredited by Any US Accrediting Agency?

As a result, AIU has chosen to align with the Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges & Universities (ASIC) due to its mission-centric approach that values autonomy and student-centered innovation. This decision reflects AIU’s dedication to offering a unique educational experience that meets the diverse needs of its student body.

The Challenges of Traditional Accreditation
Outdated Processes and Requirements
Traditional accrediting agencies often adhere to rigid, outdated criteria that may not accommodate the evolving landscape of higher education. These standards can hinder innovation and alternative educational approaches that cater to non-traditional students, such as adults seeking flexible learning options.
Impact on Non-Traditional Students and Educational Innovation
Non-traditional students often face barriers with traditional accreditation, which may not recognize personalized learning paths or competency-based assessments. This rigidity can stifle educational innovation that could better meet the diverse needs of today’s learners.
Stifling Creation, Innovation, and Sustainable Models
Traditional accreditation’s emphasis on conformity can discourage institutions from developing sustainable and innovative educational models. This approach may inadvertently limit progress toward more effective and inclusive educational practices, especially for adult learners and those seeking non-traditional educational pathways.
Comparison with ACICS
- Overview of ACICS’ Accreditation Challenges and Termination
The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) faced significant challenges leading to its termination as a recognized accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education. After a lengthy process, ACICS failed to sufficiently demonstrate its ability to evaluate, monitor, and enforce quality standards for schools. Despite initial reinstatement efforts in 2018, subsequent reports and recommendations from ED staff and advisory committees highlighted ongoing deficiencies.
- Lessons Learned and Implications for Accreditation Reform
The case of ACICS serves as a pivotal example in accreditation reform. It underscores the critical need for accrediting agencies to uphold rigorous oversight and accountability measures to ensure educational quality and student outcomes. The decision to terminate ACICS underscores the importance of adapting accreditation practices to accommodate diverse educational models and evolving student needs.
In summary, traditional accreditation’s rigid framework can impede educational progress and innovation. The experience with ACICS highlights the imperative for accreditation practices that foster adaptability and responsiveness, promoting innovation and quality in higher education.
The Call for Accreditation Reform
The current landscape of accreditation in higher education within the United States presents a fragmented and historically rooted system that often prioritizes institutional interests over broader public accountability. This framework, while originally designed to ensure quality and institutional improvement, has faced criticism for its rigidity and focus on input-based metrics rather than outcomes that truly reflect educational effectiveness and student success.
The Need for Accreditation Reform is Crucial
Accreditation processes, managed by regional and specialized bodies largely funded and governed by member institutions, have become complex and cumbersome. This complexity can stifle innovation and flexibility in educational practices, limiting the ability of institutions to adapt to evolving educational needs and societal demands. Moreover, the emphasis on adherence to historical standards may not effectively address contemporary challenges in higher education.
AIU Supports More Dynamic and Student-Focused Accreditation Standards
To address these shortcomings, there is a growing call for accreditation reform that emphasizes dynamic, student-focused standards. Such reforms would prioritize measurable outcomes that demonstrate educational quality and student achievement. This shift would ensure that accreditation serves not only as a quality assurance mechanism but also as a catalyst for continuous improvement and innovation in teaching, learning, and student support services, that’s what AIU accreditation journey is all about.
By aligning accreditation standards with modern educational goals and the expectations of students, employers, and society at large, institutions can enhance transparency, accountability, and the relevance of higher education. This approach would empower institutions to innovate, adapt curriculum to meet industry needs like how AIU has been doing it for more than 25 years now, and prepare graduates for success in diverse professional environments.
The push for accreditation reform seeks to modernize and streamline the accreditation process, making it more responsive to the evolving needs of students and the demands of a globalized economy. By focusing on outcomes and educational effectiveness, accreditation can better serve its intended purposes of ensuring quality, fostering innovation, and promoting public trust in higher education.
